Getting started

How to set up Seawall

Create an account, then tap Add device in it. Seawall gives each device its own address and shows the steps for it: Private DNS on Android, a profile on iPhone, iPad and Mac, DNS over HTTPS on Windows, and two IP addresses on a router or smart TV. It takes about a minute on a phone or computer, a few minutes on a router or TV.

How to check that Seawall is working

Open your account: the status at the top says Protected, and each device shows when it last used Seawall. For a full check, run the adblock test on the device. It tries to load 24 ad and tracker addresses and shows how many were blocked.

Run the adblock test

Does Seawall work on mobile data and other Wi-Fi?

Yes, when Seawall is set on the device itself: Private DNS on Android and the profile on iPhone work on any network. A router setup covers only the devices on that router’s Wi-Fi.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Seawall uses settings that are already on your devices, so there’s no app or browser extension to install or keep updated.

Set up devices

What to enter as the Private DNS provider hostname

Your personal Seawall address from your account, for example k3x9q7.dns.seawalldns.com. On most Android phones, open Settings › Network & internet › Private DNS, choose “Private DNS provider hostname”, paste the address and tap Save.

On Samsung it’s Settings › Connections › More connection settings › Private DNS. On Xiaomi it’s Settings › Connection & sharing › Private DNS.

“Private DNS server cannot be accessed”: how to fix it

Android shows this when it can’t reach the address in Private DNS. Check these in order:

  1. The address has no typos or spaces. Copy it from your account instead of typing it.
  2. You’re online. On hotel or café Wi-Fi, set Private DNS to Automatic, sign in on the Wi-Fi login page, then switch back.
  3. The network allows encrypted DNS. Some office and public networks block it; on mobile data it works.
  4. No other VPN or DNS app is on.
How to change DNS on your router

Open your router’s settings page, find the DNS section and replace the DNS servers with the two Seawall addresses from your account. Then link your home IP address in your account, so Seawall knows these requests are yours. Every device on that Wi-Fi is then covered.

How to remove the profile from your iPhone

Seawall works on iPhone through a settings profile. To remove it, open Settings › General › VPN & Device Management, tap the Seawall profile and choose Remove Profile. Your iPhone goes back to your network’s usual DNS.

How to turn off Private DNS

Open the same menu where you set it up, for example Settings › Network & internet › Private DNS, and choose Off or Automatic. Seawall then stops filtering on that phone. To let one site through and keep the rest of the protection, allow the site instead.

Unblocking and errors

How to unblock a website

To unblock a website, add it to your allow list. If you’re looking for how to whitelist a website, it’s the same thing. In your account, tap Allow a site on the overview, or open Protection › Allow and block lists › Allowed. If the query log is on, you can also tap Allow next to the address in Activity. An allowed site opens even if a filter blocks it.

If the page still doesn’t load, close and reopen the browser: devices remember DNS answers for a short time.

DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN: what it means and how to fix it

Chrome shows this error when DNS answers that a site doesn’t exist. With Seawall on, it usually means the site is on a block list. Check the spelling first. Then pause protection for 10 minutes and reload: if the site opens, it was blocked, and you can allow it.

A site or app stopped working after I set up Seawall

Pause protection for 10 minutes and try again. If it works while paused, Seawall is blocking something it needs: allow the site, or switch the blocking level in Protection from Strict to Standard. Strict blocks more trackers and can break some apps and sign-in pages.

Why do I still see ads on YouTube?

Ads inside YouTube videos come from the same servers as the videos, so no DNS service can block them without blocking YouTube itself. Seawall still blocks ads on other sites and in other apps.

Why do I still see some ads in apps or on sites?

Some sites serve ads from their own address, like sponsored posts in a social feed. DNS can’t tell those apart from the rest of the site. If you see ads from an ad network get through, email us the site or app name and we’ll check it.

Parental controls

How to set up parental controls

Parental controls are part of the Family plan. In your account, open Family › Add profile and pick a preset: Little kids, Kids or Teens. Then add your child’s device to that profile. You can change any rule later.

Parental controls in detail

Can my child turn Seawall off?

Only if they can change the settings on their device. On your iPhone, open Settings › Family › your child’s name › Content & Privacy Restrictions and choose what your child can use and change on their device. Family Link on Android can’t lock Private DNS, so set Seawall up on your router too: protection at home keeps working even if your child changes it. Seawall also blocks known VPN and proxy services in child profiles.

How to block an app like TikTok or Roblox

Open your child’s profile in Protection and tap the service under Services. You can also turn off games, social media and video at set times with a schedule.

Account and billing

How to cancel your subscription

In your account, open Subscription › Cancel subscription. Protection stays on until the end of the period you paid for. After that, filtering stops, your devices work as usual and your settings are kept for 30 days.

Can I get a refund?

Yearly plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee: cancel within that time and choose a refund. If you live in the EU or the UK, you can also withdraw from any paid plan within 14 days of buying it and get your money back, minus the days you already used. After that, monthly plans aren’t refunded, but protection stays on until the end of the month you paid for.

Refund policy

How to switch plans

Open Subscription › Change plan. When you move from Personal to Family, your devices and rules stay as they are, and your account becomes the first profile.

Which payment methods can I use?

Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay and crypto. Offices can also pay by invoice.

Privacy and security

What does Seawall know about my browsing?

Like any DNS service, Seawall sees the names of the sites your devices look up, and uses them only to filter. The query log is off by default. If you turn it on, it keeps the list for 1, 7, 30 or 90 days. Your IP address isn’t stored with your queries.

How to delete your account

Open Settings › Privacy and data › Delete account. Then remove the Seawall address from your devices, so they go back to your network’s usual DNS.

What is the No gambling lock?

In Protection › Limits you can turn on No gambling and lock it for a day up to a year. While it’s locked, pausing protection won’t open betting sites and they can’t be allowed. You can remove the lock yourself at any time.

How does the Seawall assistant work?

Tap Ask Seawall in your account to ask about setup, blocked sites or your rules. It’s an AI assistant: it sees your devices and settings, not the sites you visit, and it changes settings only after you confirm. It can make mistakes, so check important answers.
